This is way off topic from what I normally discuss on my blog.
But it is also what will fast become a hot topic, so after browsing Google for the answer and getting nowhere, I decided I would be the first to post a solution that hopefully you will find useful.
So, you’ve just got your shiny new Nokia N97 mobile phone, had a play with it for a few minutes (or HOURS in my case) and you’re now at the stage where you want to install Nokia’s new software suite, the OVI Suite (replacing PC Suite).
Great, this shouldn’t be a problem for most of you. But I can pretty much guarantee that more than a few will encounter an error during installation similar to this…
Nokia Ovi Suite Software Updater
Error 1327
Invalid Drive: G:\
Or maybe not Invalid G: drive, maybe some other drive letter.
If you’ve got this problem and have no idea how to fix it, then here it is…
It does involve editing the registry, but I assure you it’s easy if you know what the registry is, if you don’t know then leave a comment below and I will send you a private message.
Anyway here’s the solution:
- Load regedit
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
- Shell folders are basically your “My documents/videos/pictures …etc etc and each of them should be pointing at the C:\ drive as the root drive.
- Look for offending entries that are pointing to the same drive letter that flagged up the error during the Ovi installation – chances are it’s a detached USB drive or similar
- double click the entries one at a time until they are pointing back at the default path, E.g
Personally, “My Music” was pointing at my disconnected backup USB drive (G:\) for some strange reason, like this
G:\New From Laptop\Paul\My Documents\My Music
Simply changed this to the default entry, which is…
C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\My Documents\My Music
Additional (after playing around a bit, I noticed the following other entries may be causing the problem)
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Follow steps 2-5 above for each of these other registry keys then…
rerun the Ovi suite setup, chances are it should work now
Hope this has been helpful, apologies for the tech speak in this post guys and girls, but if you do want a video created, let me know and I will put one together so you can see what to do!
Cheers,
Paul.
Hi – I have this exact problem but it talks about drive n – now this laptop is the roaming device from my office network where drive n is where all of my colleagues files are stored as are mine (I have a complete sync of my files on the laptop and, when I am in my office and my laptop is networked into the system then the files automatically sync). Would changing the drive letter to something local to the laptop still apply in this case? Or should I just wait until I am in the office and try to install the appropriate Ovi files then?
Hi Ricky,
From a corporate environment point of view, I would try installing the software onsite as a first. The problem with changing files on your laptop which is part of a network domain (office network) is that a) you might “break” something or b) you may be “locked down” and unable to make the change anyway.
Give it a try this morning and let me know how it goes

I’ve had the same difficulty installing on my new Windows 7 laptop. In my case it’s my network drive. It won’t install with the network drive connected. I moved ‘My Documents’ to O:.
I’ve tried the registry edit but it doesn’t help. The only mention of O: in that registry section was for ‘O:My Documents’.
I’m now looking for further ideas.
Chris.
Hi Chris,
For you and the others where the original “fix” didn’t work, I have had a more indepth look at the problem and have updated the post which should now hopefully cover all possibilities
Paul.
hi Paul,
Thanks man, it really worked, thank a lot,
Manoj
You’re welcome my friend
Really good work about this website was done. Keep trying more – thanks!
